Whose Blood?

© Julie Ruffell

The battle rages
Blood soaks the dirt
The sound of clashing swords and screaming
Is not hear by any of the warriors
They cannot see the death
It's a fight to survive
Only their life is important
Only their life is seen
There are only a few warriors
Who look beyond themselves
They see their comrades falling in the mud
And they die a little inside at every scream
They fight through the battle
No regard for themselves
Hoping to save those who fight with them
But in moving so blindly to help another
Blades find their flesh
And it is their blood that stains the ground
Yet still they move on to aid another
How long must they press on?
When is it okay to stop?
When can they fight for their life?
Must they endure all the pain
In hopes that they will save the other?
What if their ally is a traitor?
What it they are just waiting to turn their sword
On the hero?
It's a battle. The best survive
So watch your own back
And use your sword to save yourself
