In Honour Of

© Julie Ruffell

Staring down at their still forms
He gives a straggled sob
His dear friend and the woman he loves
Now dead
Killed by an unmatched pain
The Amazon beside him
Is fierce and full of rage
Together they will honour
Their fallen comrades

Moves to knock out a Roman
He knows the pain of killing
Watching the Amazon
Slaughter both Romans
Makes his stomach reel
Now they take the bodies from the crosses
He fights to hold back the tears
Wrists rubbed raw by the ropes
Hands and feet stabbed
And limp bodies
They take them down
To return them home
Warrior heart crushed
He is now lost
